Payyappally Rev. Ouseph
Kathanar
Melus heresy flourished when Chittattukara was under Varappuzha diocese.
Payyappally Ouseph Kathanar was the vicar of Chittattukara in those days. It
was mainly his initiative which was responsible for the filing of the case
against Mar Elia John Melus in the Thekkemalayam Subordinate Court. He
succeeded in obtaining a favourable judgment against the Melur bishop. He
was instrumental in organizing the people against the heresy and to fight it
until he won his battle. Thus he ignited the decline of the Melus heresy in
Chittattukara.
Rev Fr. Thachil Kochuvarkey
and Rev Fr. Vadukkutt Pathrose
After the court verdict against Melus heresy, the majority of people
realized their mistakes and rejoined the church. However some people
continued to stand aloof. It was in such a situation that in 1878 Boson and
other Basel Mission activists from Germany landed in Chittattukara. Their
activities had the indirect support of some members of the parish. When
their attempts to attract more and more members to the Basel Mission
intensified, the diocese deputed Rev Fr Thachil Kochuvarkey and Rev Fr
Vadukkutt Pathrose to the Chittattukara church. The exemplary behavior,
impressive speeches, their constant advice, and their teachings of the Word
of God attracted the believers and made them stick to the right path. Thus
they succeeded in rejuvenating strong Catholic belief in the parish once
again. And in course of time the influence of Basel Mission waned.
Pulikkott Yakob Kathanar
After the fall of the Melus heresy, a section of the believers who had been
attracted to the new ideas established a new church at Pavaratty with the
permission and blessings of Melus bishop. They continued in their heresy for
about five years. Then they realized their mistake and came back to the
right path. The church of the erstwhile heretics functioned as a chapel
under Chittattukara after that. The members of the parish from Pavaratty and
Venmenadu had often expressed the desire to have their own independent
parishes. After the formation of the Thrissur diocese in 1887, the vicar of
Chittattukara, Pulikkott Yakob Kathanar, worked hard to see that the new
parishes were approved. As a result Pavaratty parish was established in 1887
itself. The new parish had about 400 families from Pavaratty, Venmenadu,
Puvvathur, and Puthumanasserry.
Rev Fr. Jacob Arakkal
Kerala Catholic Congress is the only association of the Catholics of the
three provinces of Kerala, Travancore, Kochi, and Malabar. The first branch
of the association formed in Thrissur diocese was in Chittattukara parish.
That was why the 17th annual convention of the association was held at
Chittattukara. The vicar of the church was Rev Fr Jacob Arakkal in those
days. He was the president of the organizing committee as well. The grand
convention was held in the church compound on 27-29 May 1936. A lot of
representatives and priests from different parts of the state participated
in it. The main meeting was presided over by Rt. Rev Dr T F Roche, the
bishop of Thuthukkudy. Thrissur bishop Vazhappilly Mar Francis was also
present in the meeting. That great meeting has been an important event in
the history of the parish.
Rev Fr Mathai Cherunilam
Rev Fr Cherunilam Mathai was a social worker, educationist, and reformer. He
was also a member of the Malabar District Board. It was mainly because of
his efforts that the existing school was upgraded as a Higher Elementary
School in 1929. In those days a Higher Elementary School offered classes up
to 8. The existing manager was removed from his position and Rev Fr Mathai
took over charge as the new manager of the school that had classes from 1 to
8. He introduced fundamental changes in the running of the school. He
encouraged and supported the band sets in that area and functioned as their
protector. He made the parish decide that the band set of the land must be
hired during celebrations and feasts. It was he who placed the huge bell
brought from France in the bell tower near the eastern wall of the madbaha
in 1931. He also instituted an endowment in the school.
Rev Fr Sebastian Arakkal
(senior)
Rev Fr Sebastian Arakkal (senior) had been an excellent organizer and a one
who had literary talents. He was the holder of an MA degree. He took charge
as the vicar in 1973. His first attempt was to upgrade the school into a
high school. For that he worked hard, standing at the forefront of the
attempts made by the people of Chittattukara. At last he succeeded. In 1976
the government permitted standard 8 as a branch of Enamavu High School. It
was upgraded as a High school. Then he started the attempt to construct a
new building for the school. He got the generous support of the people. In
spite of his ill health he moved ahead channelizing the determination of the
parishioners. Thus the new High School building was completed in no time.
The services of him as the founder of the High School will always be
remembered. As a befitting token of gratitude, the main hall of the building
has been given his name
During his tenure the strong
demand for a convent at Chittattukara was expressed by everyone and he
worked hard to see that it was fulfilled. In 1978, a convent belonging to
the Franciscan Clarist Congregation started functioning here. It had been
another important contribution of Rev Fr Sebastian Arakkal (senior). Yet
another contribution was the formation of Elavally parish and its separation
from Chittattukara.
Rev Fr. Pathrose Pazhayattil
Even though Chittattukara was a commercial centre for a long time,
sufficient transport facilities were not there. The people united and
submitted a memorandum to the government for a road. Although the district
collector came to inspect the situation, the demand was ignored for lack of
funds. That was in 1914. Rev Fr Pathrose Pazhayattil was the vicar of
Chittattukara. Then the people constructed a road under the leadership of
the vicar, the road from Mattam Road to Pavaratty through Chittattukara
market. It is now called Chittattukara Bazaar Road.
Rev Fr. Mathai Puthuserry
There had been a strong request for a common pond of the church for the
people. The vicar Rev Fr Mathai Puthusserry was convinced about the
genuineness of the demand and he felt that it was absolutely essential for
the growing population. In 1895 he allotted the land of the parish called
Kottarathilparambu. With the unstinted support of the people he dug a pond
for the public. It is still there, and it is called ‘Palikkulam.’ It was a
great help to all the people as they got a fine place to take bath.
Rev Fr Kuriakose
Thalakottukara
When Rev Fr Kurialose Thalakkottukara was the vicar of Chittattukara he
wished to give more importance to the education of girls. In order to
facilitate that, he started a school for girls in 1909. The new school for
girls was called St Teresa’s and it offered classes from 1 to 5. A good
building for the school was completed in 1910. The inauguration of the
building was held in a grand manner. For a long time there were two schools,
one for boys called St Sebastian’s and the other for girls called St
Teresa’s.
Rev Fr. John (Yohannan)
Eduthuruthikkaran
In 1943, cholera spread through the area and a lot of people died as a
result of the disease. Very soon the people became terror-stricken. The
vicar in those days was Rev Fr John Eduthuruthikkaran. When he saw the
predicament of the people he advised them to depend strongly on prayer. The
whole parish started praying earnestly to St Sebastian for a remission from
the epidemic. The prayers were lead by the vicar himself. Soon there was the
remission. That incident helped the growth of the devotion to St Sebastian.
In order to express their gratitude to the saint the people celebrated a
special feast of St Sebastian on 6-7 January 1943. That was a memorable
event in the history of the parish. It was during the tenure of Rev Fr
Eduthuruthikkaran that Mar Joseph Kundukulam, the first Metropolitan of
Thrissur, served Chittattukara as an assistant vicar.
Rev Fr. George Maliakkal (M.
R)
It was during the tenure of Rev Fr Maliakkal that the plans for an overall
renovation of the parish were formulated. It was generally decided not to
destroy the antiquity completely and so in 1957 new altars, a dome, the
sacristy and the hall to the north were built after demolishing the old
madbaha partly. It was because of his strong intervention that sanction was
given in 1956 to celebrate holy mass at Elavally chapel.
Rev Fr. Jacob Anthikkadan
It was during the service of Rev Fr Jacob Anthikkadan that the tall and
imposing bell tower was built in 1950. He took lead in buying the
Thayattparambu in 1952 and constructing a school building with the
wholehearted support of the people. He demolished the L-shaped southern hall
of the school making the façade of the church more visible from afar. That
was a step to give a new facelift to the church. During his period the
statue of Fathima Matha reached Chittattukara for public veneration on 22
December 1949. It was Rev Fr Jacob Anthikkadan who presided over all the
arrangements. In order to remember that momentous occasion the church ground
was renamed Fathima Maidan
Rev Fr. James Elamkunnappuzha
The western boundary of the church compound had been a paddy field. Though
the parish tried to buy it several times it didn’t materialize. When Rev Fr
James Elamkunnappuzha came to Chittattukara as the vicar, he found that this
field was essential for the development of the church and other related
institutions and so decided to buy it at the earliest. He succeeded in
buying it in 1946 from its owner. Steps were built to the west of the church
and the access to the road was filled with soil so that processions from the
church could go smoothly through that path. Statues of angels were placed on
the pillars of the gate. The procession through the new path was that in
connection with the feast of St John on 26 May 1947. The old access through
the centre of the school building was closed down. It was Rev Fr
Elamkunnappuzha who initiated the attempt to buy the Thayattu land. He also
took the lead in building covered bathhouses for men and women I the church
pond.
Rev Fr. Thomas Parekkadan
The 200th anniversary of the church was celebrated in a very grand manner.
It has been the greatest celebration so far arranged in the parish. It was
like a grand festival. The whole programme was masterminded by the vicar Rev
Fr Thomas Parekkadan. The celebrations were on 29-31 March 1970. The
participants in the main programmes were the Governor, the Cardinal, five
bishops, several senior priests, ministers, MLAs, the District Collector,
the Mayor, leaders of other religions and several other dignitaries and
guests. In order to prepare the parishioners for the bicentenary, a ten-day
Capuchin mission retreat was organized before the event, from 22 February.
When the former assistant vicar of Chittattukara, Mar Joseph Kundukulam, was
given a grand reception on 23 August 1970, he distributed land patta to the
18 tenants of the church.
Rev Fr. Ookken Geevarghese
During the time of Rev Fr Ookken Geevarghese attempts were made to establish
a post office at Chittattukara. The sanction was accorded in course of time
and the post office started functioning on 1 July 1924. It functioned in the
last room in the northern wing of the building of Rev Fr Yakob Pulikkottil.
During his time a chapel was erected at Elavally
Rev Fr. Devassy Pellisserry
When Rev Fr Devassy Pellisserry was the vicar of Chittattukara he started
the Chittattukara ‘Aikyananayasangham’. He was the inspiration behind it and
the formulator of the main ideas of the sangham. It was this that later got
transformed into the Chittattukara Service Co-operative Bank
Rev Fr. Jacob Manjooran
Chittattukara had been a main centre of gingely oil trade in the past. Rev
Fr Jacob Manjooran formed a co-operative bank for those engaged in oil
extraction in 1958. That was later transformed into the present Oil
Extractors Co-operative society functioning at Pavaratty. It was during his
period that the cemetery was renovated. |
