About The Church

Introduction
Chittattukara parish is situated 22 kilometers to the northwest of Thrissur, and 5 kilometers to the southeast of Guruvayur. It is only 6 kilometers away from the famous and historically important Palayur.

The parish church is dedicated to St Sebastian. The parish community strongly believes that in 1943, the people had a miraculous escape from a wide spread epidemic of cholera and other diseases mainly due to the intervention of the patron saint. The parish community that had a narrow escape from death celebrated a special feast of the saint in July 1943. After that the feast of the saint was celebrated on the 20th of every month. That practice is still kept.

Strength
Number of family units : 27
Number of families : 727
Number of members : 3300

The parish community spread through 27 units exerts considerable influence in the runni9ng of the parish. Every month a small collection is taken through family units and that amount, called ‘snehanidhi,’ is the main source of the charity fund of the parish.

The vast majority of the parishioners are average income people. In the past Chittattukara had been a famous trade centre. Even now it has retained that tradition but a considerable number of its people are now engaged in other professions like teaching. The society has a pluralistic nature now. A lot of its people are abroad.

Infrastructure
Chapels

There are seven chapels in the parish.

1. Muthyema Chapel:
established before 1300. Muthyema chapel, situated in the centre of the bazaar road, and mentioned in the travelogue of Marco Polo, the famous Venetian traveler (1275-92), is considered to be historically very important. Every year the feast of St Joseph is celebrated there on 19 March with the holy mass.

2. Chakkanthara Chapel:
established 1974 Chakkanthara chapel, in the name of St Sebastian, is on Chittattukara-Puvvathur road. There is a feast immediately before the lent every year.

3 Calvary chapel:

5. The Western chapel:
Established 1985 It is situated at Paul Master junction, facing the road, at the western end of the Bazaar road. On every Friday during the lent, people go on a procession from here to the main church. The feast of the patron saint, Kochu Thresia is celebrated every year on 1 January.

6. Kizhakkethala Chapel:
Established 1995 It is in the name of Velankanny Matha. It faces the road at the easternmost end of the Chittattukara Bazaar road. The novena and others prayers to the Virgin Mother are held on Saturdays after the first Fridays every month. Special veneration of the Holy Mother is held throughout the month of May (Vanakkamasam). Hundreds of devotees flock to the chapel on the last day of May for the Oottuthirunal. Every day we can find lots of people coming to this chapel to pray. Most of them come here taking Holy Mother to be the protectress of travelers.

Activities of Devotional Organizations
The organizations that function in the parish help the spiritual growth of the people significantly. They also pay attention to the social service drives of the parish. The vicars ensure that the organizations carry out their responsibilities admirably and faultlessly. You will find a bird’s eye view of the various activities of the devotional organizations below.

St Sebastian’s Darsanasabha
This organization in the name of the courageous martyr St Sebastian was established in 1862. The annual celebrations of the organization form part of the feast of the saint celebrated on 4-8 January every year. The bell tower is of the several contributions of the organization. CLC is the continuation of Marian fellowship started by Rev Fr John Lenis SJ of Belgium and officially acknowledged by Pope Gregory XIII through the Papal decree “Sarvasakthan”. The aim of CLC is to train dedicated young men and women to take up the service of the church and the world in every field. It is one of the most active organizations in the parish. It often fights against social evils and leads the youth into constructive activities.

The branch was established in the parish in 1947. Our conference is one of the best in the forane. The main income is the money obtained through regular contribution of rice by the mothers, generous contribution of coconuts, and collections taken during feasts. The sixtieth anniversary was celebrated in 2007. There was also an old people’s meet in connection with that.
