Introduction
Chittattukara parish is situated 22 kilometers to the northwest of Thrissur,
and 5 kilometers to the southeast of Guruvayur. It is only 6 kilometers away
from the famous and historically important Palayur.
The parish church is dedicated
to St Sebastian. The parish community strongly believes that in 1943, the
people had a miraculous escape from a wide spread epidemic of cholera and
other diseases mainly due to the intervention of the patron saint. The
parish community that had a narrow escape from death celebrated a special
feast of the saint in July 1943. After that the feast of the saint was
celebrated on the 20th of every month. That practice is still kept.
Strength
Number of family units : 27
Number of families : 727
Number of members : 3300
The parish community spread
through 27 units exerts considerable influence in the runni9ng of the
parish. Every month a small collection is taken through family units and
that amount, called ‘snehanidhi,’ is the main source of the charity fund of
the parish.
The vast majority of the
parishioners are average income people. In the past Chittattukara had been a
famous trade centre. Even now it has retained that tradition but a
considerable number of its people are now engaged in other professions like
teaching. The society has a pluralistic nature now. A lot of its people are
abroad.
Infrastructure
Chapels

bazaar road, and mentioned in the travelogue of Marco Polo, the famous

important. Every year the feast of St Joseph is celebrated there on 19 March
with the holy mass.

Activities of
Devotional Organizations
The organizations that function
in the parish help the spiritual growth of the people significantly. They
also pay attention to the social service drives of the parish. The vicars
ensure that the organizations carry out their responsibilities admirably and
faultlessly. You will find a bird’s eye view of the various activities of
the devotional organizations below.
St Sebastian’s Darsanasabha
This organization in the name of the courageous martyr St Sebastian was
established in 1862. The annual celebrations of the organization form part
of the feast of the saint celebrated on 4-8 January every year. The bell
tower is of the several contributions of the organization. The cemetery of
the church was renovated in 1962 in connection with the centenary of the
Darsanasabha.
CLC
CLC is the continuation of Marian fellowship started by Rev Fr John Lenis SJ
of Belgium and officially acknowledged by Pope Gregory XIII through the
Papal decree “Sarvasakthan”. The aim of CLC is to train dedicated young men
and women to take up the service of the church and the world in every field.
It is one of the most active organizations in the parish. It often fights
against social evils and leads the youth into constructive activities.
Althara Susrusha Sangham
(established 1920)
The Altharasangham is in the name of Pope St Pious X. The organization
provides an opportunity to young boys to give prime importance to thoughts
about God through participation in the services as the acolytes. It is to be
mentioned that several boys who grew through this organization got vocation
later.
The society of St Vincent de
Paul
The organization was established to demonstrate belief through actions, to
grow in piety, to lead others to piety, to console the poor, and to help
others finding the face Christ in them. The branch was established in the
parish in 1947. Our conference is one of the best in the forane. The main
income is the money obtained through regular contribution of rice by the
mothers, generous contribution of coconuts, and collections taken during
feasts. The sixtieth anniversary was celebrated in 2007. There was also an
old people’s meet in connection with that.
Mathrusangham
The Mathrusangham is a very active organization established in the parish in
1957. They run Jubilee Memorial Tailoring Institute. Orientation classes are
regularly held using audio-visual means for the mothers of the parish.

have also instituted a wedding support fund for poor girls.
Thirubalasakhyam
It was established in 1984 in this parish. It is an organization of the
little children of Infant Jesus which is presided over by the Pope. The main

encourage them to do little services motivated by the love for Infant Jesus,
and to pray for orphans, the destitute, and non-Christians.

patron of CLA. There are more than a hundred members in it. The main thrust
is labour-friendly activities. It operates an employee welfare scheme
successfully. A welfare fund and a fund for supporting the bereaved have
been started. In 2007 the My day celebration of the diocese was held here
under the leadership of CLC.
KCYM
This was one of the last organizations to have its branch at Chittattukara.
The branch was established only on 9 September 2007. It is somewhat
different from other devotional organizations. It has been supported and
inspired by the vicar Rev Fr Paulson Palathinkal. There are about fifty
members in the association now. In a short period KCYM has put in a very
impressive performance. It conducted a blood testing camp on 2 December
2007.
Institutions
